Private Estate
French Antique Fireplace Restorations
in Collaboration with a Luxury Property Developer
Surrey, UK ⋅ Project Type: Restoration
Project Overview
Marble Hill Fireplaces was commissioned by leading luxury London property developer to restore and install a series of antique French mantels within a private estate known as Bishopsgate House. The expansive property styled in the manner of a grand English mansion required specialist attention across multiple rooms including a bedroom suite, bar, and formal reception room. Our work involved the careful restoration of several original French antique fireplaces and the installation of a period Pompadour mantel, all designed to accommodate modern open gas fires. Each fireplace was complemented by antique granite hearths, fully lined chambers, and one with a bespoke Contre Coeur fire chamber.
The Mantel
The fireplaces included in this project were fine examples of French antique craftsmanship, showcasing exquisite gilded detailing, fluted jambs, classical motifs, and original marblework. Among them was a newly sourced and installed French Pompadour mantel, chosen for its elegant silhouette and historical relevance to the property’s architectural language.

The Restoration Process
The original mantels arrived in varying conditions, with many requiring extensive restoration. Working from our London studio in Twickenham, each component was carefully assessed, cleaned, and repaired using traditional stone masonry techniques. Missing or damaged sections were rebuilt, with special attention paid to the preservation of gilded embellishments and intricate mouldings.
Fireplace Chamber, Fire selection, design and Installation
Each fireplace was tailored to house open gas fires, requiring close coordination between design, fire selection, and chamber preparation. One fireplace featured a Contre Coeur chamber, hand-built to reflect French historical styles, enhancing both the aesthetic and the flame effect. All other fireplaces were relined to suit open gas applications while maintaining the period-appropriate look of each room.
Hearth & Surround
Antique granite hearths were selected for all rooms their tonal depth and natural veining perfectly complemented the restored marble surrounds. The hearths were templated and installed with precision, ensuring seamless integration with the original mantels and the newly constructed chambers.
Expertise & Craftsmanship
With over 40 years of experience in antique and bespoke fireplace restoration, the Marble Hill team brought deep technical knowledge and sensitivity to this project. Every stage from sourcing to on-site installation was executed with artisan precision, working hand-in-hand with the property developer to meet the demanding standards of a high end estate restoration.
The Result
The restored French fireplaces now serve as elegant focal points throughout the residence. Each mantel enhances its setting, blending historic character with modern functionality. The integration of open gas fires was achieved without compromising period detail, and the antique granite hearths complete the refined aesthetic.
In collaboration with a high end London property developer, the result is a series of statement pieces that honour tradition while meeting the demands of contemporary living.
