Project Portfolio:

Reinstatement of period fireplaces in a Grade II listed townhouse

Project Overview

This project involved the restoration and installation of an ornate English statuary marble mantel within a listed property in Belgravia. The work formed part of a wider interior update, where period detailing was retained while upgrading the fire system to meet modern requirements.

The Mantel

The original fireplace was a fine example of English neoclassical design, featuring intricate carvings including urn motifs, floral swags, and classical reliefs. While structurally intact, the mantel showed signs of wear, staining, and damage to the carved leg sections from years of use and previous alterations.

The Restoration Process

Our in-house team carried out a full restoration, carefully preserving the mantel’s historical detail. The Fireplace Restoration included:

  • Specialist stone cleaning to remove surface staining and age discolouration
  • Chip and crack repairs using traditional materials
  • Restoration of the carved leg details to return them to their original condition
  • Final refinishing and colour-matching for visual consistency

The result is a revitalised fireplace surround that retains its character while presenting as structurally sound and visually refined.”

Fireplace Chamber, Fire selection, design and Installation
The fireplace chamber was carefully prepared with materials to complement the restored mantel. Black stone surrounds and chamber panels were selected to provide visual contrast and frame the fireplace opening with understated elegance.

Hearth & Surround
A honed granite hearth was fabricated and installed to provide contrast and balance to the stone surround. It also fulfils the technical and safety requirements of the selected fire.

Expertise & Craftsmanship
This project highlights the specialist skills of our restoration team, combining precise stone conservation with practical fire installation expertise. Every stage from cleaning and carving to final assembly was managed in-house by our experienced artisans and installers.
